A Holiday Walking Tour

A Holiday Walking Tour

There’s no better place in New York to celebrate the holiday season than Greenwich Village. Featuring some of the oldest existing architecture in the city, often decked in pine garland and traditional red bows, this historic neighborhood can quickly transport you to another time. Wander away from your home at the 70 Charlton condos for an evening meander through some of the Village’s less-traveled side streets, where the din of avenue traffic fades and the road narrows as it curves, winding a beckoning path that is out of step with the rest of the city grid. Take in the elaborately decorated windows, check out the lights, do a bit of shopping, and see the storied sights of one of the best parts in the city — the 70 Charlton Soho condos put you near to it all.

At the top of the list of many not-to-be-missed holiday sites in Greenwich Village is the Washington Square Christmas Tree. Lit in early December during NYC’s second-longest-running tree lighting ceremony, the 45-foot Christmas tree twinkles for the entire season between sunset and 1 am, courtesy of The Washington Square Association. Make a pilgrimage to see it, but be sure to return on Christmas Eve at 5 pm to celebrate with caroling at the Washington Square Arch. Led by The Rob Susman Brass Quartet, revelers from throughout the city will gather to jubilantly sing all of your favorite holiday classics. Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten some of the words — songbooks are available, once more, compliments of the Washington Square Association.

If you’re looking to score a tree of your own, there are a number of options, but none quite so convenient as SoHo Trees. You can select a full, fresh pine, and drag it home to decorate. Or, if you’re not feeling up to carrying that eight-foot spruce (or maybe just not into getting sap and needles all over your favorite winter coat), fear not. SoHo Trees also delivers. And installs trees. AND decorates them, should you like. Using premium bulbs and lights and incorporating both your input and those heirloom ornaments you inherited, the staff from SoHo Trees will create an elegant display matched to your tastes and specifications. Worried about them climbing around in your apartment? Forget about it. Their elves are insured, so you can breathe easy as they climb their own ladder to place the included tree topper.

Take a break and take the chill off your evening out with a bag of roasted chestnuts from any number of street carts and chase them down with a cup of hot cocoa from any one of several top-tier Village bakeries. A Jacques Torres beverage paired with their chocolate chip cookies couldn’t be more perfect. If Dominique Ansel Bakery is your play, then you must try the frozen s’mores and a Blossoming Hot Chocolate. And, if you happen to be near Ladurée New York Soho, ask for a table and linger over the dessert menu as a gift to yourself before heading back out.

Finally, take some time to shop and pick out that perfect gift at any one of the many world-class shops in the neighborhood. You’ll find easy, last-minute holiday gift shopping at Apple, Kith, Supreme, Louis Vuitton, Polo Ralph Lauren, Patagonia, and so many others throughout the area.
